What is Hospice Care?

Hospice care is sensitive medical care for those with a limited amount of time, usually six months, to live and where the focus is on treating the individual’s symptoms and managing their quality of life. Healthcare professionals work with the loved ones’ family members to ensure a high quality of care that is proficient at seeing to their needs and their last requests. Maintaining their comfort levels while effectively managing their symptoms is what these providers will strive to provide during this specialized care. Hospice care usually starts around the time that treatments are proven to no longer be effective and when it is anticipated that their life will end soon. This care can also be administered wherever the person is, whether that is in their private home or a nursing home facility, so that they get the opportunity to be around familiar surroundings during this time. Bringing this hospice care to them in their own space allows for your loved one to go through this part of their journey surrounded by their friends and family members in a familiar place.

Services Provided

BRiO Home Health and Hospice offers numerous services so that your loved one can end their days in quality comfort and security while ensuring that their needs are being effectively met. Working together, providers and family members will assess the needs and wants of the individual on hospice care to create a management plan with the different services that can be provided. Hospice care provides holistic services that serve to help the physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual needs of your loved one.

A Team of Care

Care providers will form a team for your loved ones specific hospice care needs and will be available to the family members or caregivers 24/7. There will always be someone on-call from the hospice team should anyone need assistance. They will also be coordinating a symptom management plan and be in communication with important parties such as pharmacists, doctors, and other family members.

Pain and Symptom Management

Treating the symptoms and side effects during this time of hospice care can include pain medication and relieving stress from the individual. This service can allow your loved one to live as pain free as possible during this time and limit the amount of side effects that a person might be feeling. Making sure that their care needs are being addressed, with caregivers and family members being involved in their care, is vital to ensuring their pain and symptoms are being well managed.

Offering Spiritual Care

Based on the individual’s preference for spiritual care, hospice can assist in helping to meet the spiritual needs of your loved one. Coordinating meetings with spiritual clergy, spiritual rituals, or just talking through the spiritual thought processes are a few ways that hospice care can ensure that their spiritual needs are being effectively met.

Grieving Care and Counseling

After your loved one has passed on, hospice care can even take their services a step further by offering grieving care and grief counseling. The surviving friends and family members can receive care to help through the grieving process, whether by hospice professionals or referrals to healthcare professionals. These services can be provided for up to one year after your loved one has passed on.

Who Can Receive Hospice Care?

Those who are eligible to receive hospice care can consist of either adults, children or adolescents that have around six months left of life due to terminal illness or a lifetime prognosis of limited time. When it has been clinically determined that a patient has six months or less to live, then patients will be eligible for hospice care. There are many different circumstances and diagnoses that an individual can have at the time of their hospice care. Some of those common diagnosis include:

  • Alzheimer’s Disease
  • Cancer
  • Strokes
  • Parkinson’s Disease
  • Renal Failure
  • Liver Failure
  • Chronic Kidney Disease
  • Heart/Lung Disease

When there is no ongoing or active treatment being administered for any of these diagnoses, that is usually when hospice care begins to be considered. Family members, healthcare providers, and the patient will all help in making the decision to start providing hospice care.
